The Salaam Biographical Dictionary contains
2460 biographical entries compiled by M. Nauman Khan in conjunction with Ghulam Mohiuddin, whose own idea and initial research laid the foundation of this project.
The selection is wide-ranging, spanning a period from early Islamic
history
to the Twentieth Century. It includes short accounts of of men and
women who have emerged from a Muslim milleau to influence the cultural, political and intellectual
life of the society around them.
Muslim culture has a long tradition of biographical compilations.
One of the earliest biographical dictionaries was that of Ibn
Khalikan,
born in Erbil in Iraq in 1211, who compiled the seven volume
'Wafayat al-A'yan wa Anba' Abna' al-Zaman'
